Giratina (Japanese: ギラティナ Giratina) is a dual-type Ghost/Dragon Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

While information technology is not known to evolve to or from whatever other Pokémon, Giratina has a second forme activated by giving Giratina a Griseous Orb to hold, or past using the Griseous Core on information technology. It volition besides transform while it is in its habitation, the Distortion World. Its original forme, Altered Forme, will then go Origin Forme.

Giratina's Origin Forme was officially revealed in early Feb 2008.

Giratina is the game mascot of Pokémon Platinum, appearing on the boxart in its Origin Forme.

Along with Dialga and Palkia, it is a member of the creation trio of Sinnoh, representing antimatter.

Biology

Giratina is a big, grayness, draconic Pokémon with three gilt one-half-rings on each side of its long neck. Its caput has a gold crown-like object surrounding it with 2 large horns pointing sideways. A thick blackness stripe runs vertically forth its front with v red horizontal stripes. In its Altered Forme, it has ii large black ghostly wings with three red tips on each that tin can resemble claws. These wings tin alter shape as if made of a liquid or gas. Its half dozen legs are thick and accept gold claws. 2 gilded one-half-circles similar to those on its neck are on each side of each leg, resembling shackles. It has a tail. Giratina remains in Altered Forme when outside of its home dimension.

In its Origin Forme, it takes on a serpentine wait. Its legs are reduced to gold-tipped spikes, and iv additional golden spikes appear near the border of its tail. While in Origin Forme, the six gilded one-half-rings can grip objects. The back points of each half-ring have a black ghostly tendril with scarlet a fasten at its tip. The horns on its head are now facing the dorsum. The sides of the gilt "crown" comprehend its mouth and separate vertically like an insect's mandible when information technology opens its mouth. The blackness vertical stripe is broken into pieces and runs all the way downwardly its trunk. Giratina can only be in its Origin Forme when in its home, the Distortion World, or when belongings either a Griseous Orb or Griseous Core. Giratina can also maintain its Origin Forme in real world without items should information technology get sufficient corporeality of power, enough to potentially be equal to Arceus. Giratina is at its total ability when in the Origin Forme.

The Origin Forme of Giratina is said to exist Giratina's true class, capable of traveling through and controlling dimensions besides those of fourth dimension and space. When in its Origin Forme, it is able to pass through dimensions at volition, nevertheless, it will turn back to its Altered Forme due to the gravity change from the Distortion World. Giratina has the ability to turn itself into a shadow and to merge the Distortion Globe with the Pokémon world, as seen during the events of Spear Colonnade. However, this has the dangerous side of upshot of distorting information technology to the risk of beingness destroyed. Giratina is a highly aggressive and territorial Pokémon that is protective of its dwelling house. Legends claim that Giratina appears in cemeteries and that it supposedly lives in a globe on the reverse side of the Pokémon earth. Giratina has also been reported to appear in aboriginal cemeteries. Every bit seen in Pokémon Legends: Arceus Giratina has the power to tear a hole in reality, creating a space-time rift along with driving both Dialga and Palkia berserk. The rift is capable of creating the Alpha Pokémon and driving Noble Pokémon into berserk Lord/Lady States.

Giratina was said to be banished for its supposedly tearing behavior, though in the anime, it is shown to possess a gentle side as well. Giratina at one point carried a grudge against its creator Arceus and was willing to stand against it, though years later, it would become a protector of the world. Giratina is said to have observed the existent world silently while in its own home dimension. The anime reveals Giratina can also open portals though annihilation that reflects. Giratina's office is to go on both worlds in balance.

Giratina is the merely known Pokémon that can acquire Shadow Force.

Origin

Giratina may exist based on the biblical figure of the fallen angel, celestial beings that rebelled against God and were excommunicated to Hell. This is coordinating to Giratina, due to beingness a Pokémon created by Arceus (Pokémon World's God) and excommunicated to some other dimension due to its belligerent nature. Nonetheless, it might have drawn inspiration by Samael, who is the ruler of the 5th Sky and has grim and subversive duties whilst beingness a member of a heavenly host; both traits allude to Giratina existence the ruler of another dimension (Reverse World) and its threatening visage. Furthermore, both of Giratina'due south Forms resemble the Beasts of Revelation, with its Altered Grade standing for the "Earth Beast", and its Origin Grade standing for the "Sea Beast".

Giratina may also be based on Seta, a behemothic centipede, from the Japanese fairy-tale, "My Lord Bag of Rice", which was said to prey on dragon hatchlings and be as large every bit a mountain.

In its Altered Forme, Giratina's wings may be based on a bat's, and its body has an insect-similar, six-legged feature, simply its posture is like to a sauropod.

Its Origin Forme has a body similar to the Seraphim, an archangel ordinarily known for its 6 wings, and in some depictions, a serpentine body (due to saraph meaning snake or snake in Islamic languages). Additionally, "Seraphim" alternatively translates to "[the] burning one", which could have been one of the inspirations for Giratina'south destructive nature. The exact design of its six wings may exist based on a scorpion's stinger or spider legs. This Forme also shares concrete traits with the Amphiptere, a European dragon-like creature with wings merely no legs.

In interviews Junichi Masuda and Takeshi Kawachimaru had with G4, they said that Giratina and the Distortion World were created to exist personifications of antimatter.[i] In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Cynthia also states this. Its Ghost-type may have been called to represent this, being the type of metaphysical and "otherworldly" substances and beings. Additionally, it parallels its counterparts' types; Dialga is part Steel-blazon, and Palkia is part Water-type - all iii may reference the three primary states of matter; solid, liquid, and gas.
